The Miniature Schnauzer’s Ears

Miniature Schnauzer’s ears often do all sorts of strange things. Often times, teething has a major impact on what the ears do in this breed and other breeds.

I frequently receive questions regarding the Miniature Schnauzer’s ears. While all puppies look very cute with their ears uncropped, not all of them will end up looking attractive at adulthood. When a puppy is between six weeks and six months, they go through teething. Sometimes during the teething period, the cartilage in the ears strengthen and it is possible that one or both ears may start to lift and can result in either one or both ears standing straight up. Neither of these looks are attractive. I have heard from several breeders that if you feed your puppy a tablespoon or two of cottage cheese everyday (up to 6 months old) this will help with calcium and this may help the ears lay nicely.
Below are examples of what the ears look like — We love them all, no matter what.
