The Miniature Schnauzer Coat

The Miniature Schnauzer breed has a double coat. The outer coat is hard and wiry and the undercoat is softer and close to the skin. Furnishings, the longer hair on the legs and face, should be thick and not silky. The coat must be plucked or stripped to maintain the wiry texture. Show breeders generally strip the coats. The coat is stripped in sections and patterns, due to the fact the coat grows at different rates on different parts of the body. Typically, within 3-4 weeks, the coarse coat comes in fully and then the coat is maintained on a weekly basis by pulling the longest hairs (rolling the coat) and removing the undercoat. A stripped coat is harder, dirt- and water-resistant, and simply doesn’t mat up as easy as a clipped coat does. A properly cared for stripped coat will lie flatter, and so it can be left to grow longer than a clipped coat, which gets fluffy, curly and often mats up, if left to grow to long. The coarse coat holds a much better true color. The soft undercoat can be as dark as the coarse coat, much lighter or every shade in between.

Most pet owners have their Miniature Schnauzers clipped, which means that the coarse hard coat never comes in and the undercoat is clipped. Clipping will destroy the texture of the coat and will also leave the peppery part of the salt and pepper a lighter shade of gray. However, most pet owners elect to have their dogs clipped, as stripping takes a lot time and and practice. This is why many dogs are faded in color. Whether you decide to strip your dog or clipper them, the Miniature Schnauzer must be groomed often to prevent mats, particularly on the legs and in the beard.

Below are examples of what the coats look like — We love them all, no matter what.
