Merle Miniature Schnauzers

Why no Merle Miniature Schnauzers? Simply put, the Merle have a ton of health problems. To many people, Merles have charm, beauty and can be very striking. Merles being beautiful and Merles being healthy are two different things. There are several eye and hearing health issues caused by this Merle mutated gene that can happen at birth and later in life. There are many concerns with the Merles. They are also known to have a huge possibility of a defective immune system. Not many people realize that the Merle is a lethal gene and how dangerous this mutated gene is to a dog’s overall health and quality of life. This is why Merles are banned in many countries. There is no ethical reason to be breeding this Merle pattern into a dog, just for the over all unique look of the dog. These Merle colors and patterns do not represent the origin of the breed standard, as outlined by the American Miniature Schnauzer Club and the American Kennel Club. Serious breeders breed to preserve the breed and promote correct breed type as it was intended by its originators.

The first developers of the breed informed the breeders who came up with parties to not breed them. Again, serious breeders breed to preserve the breed as it was intended by its originators.
